The biggest complaint about standard dentures is that they can be challenging to keep in place and that they may not fit as well over time. Implant-retained dentures use a small number of implants to hold them in place. They differ from implant-supported dentures in that the pressure when chewing is spread between your gums and the implants instead of being completely on the implants. The advantage is that fewer implants are required, which is an ideal solution if there isn’t enough bone density to support implant-supported dentures. Implant-retained dentures are also lower in cost.
Implant-retained dentures have a removable denture on top so that you can clean them, whereas implant-supported dentures are a fixed denture. You can also go with fixed implant-retained dentures, but more implants will be needed. If you already have dentures, it is sometimes possible to adapt them to be implant-retained dentures.
