Here at Drs. Batten & Heath Family Dentistry, one of the many excellent dental services we offer are composite restorations. A composite restoration is a great solution for fixing problems which resulted from tooth decay without negatively effecting the aesthetics of your smile. They are made from a mix of plastic and glass and are then matched to blend in with the rest of your teeth.

Important Advice for Caring for your Composite Restorations

If you’re going to have one or more composite restorations done, here are some helpful tips for keeping them, and the rest of your teeth, in optimal condition:

  1. Practice exemplary oral hygiene habits – So much of the lifespan of your composite resin filling depends on the same basic habits your teeth require because that filling is dependent on the health of the remainder of the tooth it is attached to. Avoid further decay from bacteria by brushing thoroughly twice a day and flossing regularly.
  2. Avoid discoloration – your composite restoration is made to match the color of your teeth, but it can be stained or discolored after it’s been implanted. Avoid excessive intake of highly colored foods and drinks such as dark sodas.
  3. Protect your teeth – If you engage in activities that can harm your teeth, wear a mouth guard. Also avoid habits that wear on teeth such as chewing ice. If you have a habit of clenching your teeth, talk to your dentist about possible solutions.
  4. Continue regular checkups – By visiting your dentist regularly, you can make sure your composite restoration is still in good condition and catch any problems early on. Your dentist can also help you avoid the need for more restorative work.
